Harassed, insulted and raped - that is everyday for hundreds of women working in tomato, strawberry and grapes fields of Spain, Italy and Morocco. The vegetables and fruits they harvest are sold in supermarkets all over Europe and in the world.
Red Gold is a long-term project about the situation of female workers in the Mediterranean area. Workers from Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Morocco, but also native, are asked for sex in order to keep their jobs. They are so dependent on the salary that they rarely report these crimes to local law enforcement or seek out other help. They are left alone from local institutions. Turning to justice seems impossible because they don't know how to prove the abuses.
As a result of the economic crisis, of the spreading of precarious employment contracts and the increasing numbers of migrants among the workforce, the problem of sexual harassment, blackmail and violence against female workers in farming has been getting worse. Women make up between 40% and 70% of the agricultural workforce, a percentage that has steadily risen over the past 10 years.
Red Gold is a book published in Italian by Settenove (more than 40 presentations in 8 months).
Red gold is a journalistic investigation in English, German, Spanish, Italian published by Correctiv and BuzzFeed with Pascale Mueller.
Red gold is a photo exhibition travelling around Italy, from Trento to Bari.
